Wine Terms You Pretend to Know (But Don’t): A 3-Part Series

jacky blisson mw

Let’s be honest—wine terminology can be confusing. In fact, some wine vocabulary is so esoteric and contensious that even connoisseurs argue about its meaning. Whether you’re new to wine or just faking your way through tastings, you’re not alone.

In this 3-part wine education video series, I (Jacky Blisson, Master of Wine) break down the most misunderstood wine tasting terms and explain them in clear, no-nonsense language. If you’ve ever wondered what people really mean when they talk about grippy tannins, or a firm structure, or high volatile acidity, these short videos are for you.

And, if you want to boost your wine language skills, check out my nerdy little guide to tannins descriptors and my explanation of why acidity in wine matters.

Episode 1: The Classics of Wine Tasting

Learn the basics: acidity, body, texture, tannins, and finish—what they are, how to recognize them, and why they matter.

Episode 2: The Fancy-Sounding Jargon

We’re decoding structure, balance, complexity, terroir, and minerality—terms that sound impressive, but often confuse even seasoned wine lovers.

Episode 3: The Sciencey Stuff

Ever heard someone say a wine is “bretty” or that the VA is too high? Discover the science behind oxidation, malolactic fermentation, brettanomyces, and volatile acidity.

If you have a wine term or any other wine education questions that you would like explained, don’t hesitate to write me a comment…and I might just make you a video!

N.B. Oak is not the only type of wood used to age wine. Chestnut, Acacia, and Cherry wood are favoured in some areas. Oak for wine barrels can also originate from many other areas. This short video just covers the most common styles.

Jura Wine Film: The Ultimate Guide to the Jura

jura wine film

My Jura wine film is here! The vineyards grown in the Jura foothills of eastern France make mesmerizing wines. However, they do require a little initiation. Many of the region’s grapes are lesser known, and the oxidative, yeast-influenced style of the Jura’s most iconic wines is…an acquired taste. But, Jura wines are hugely popular with oenophiles. Curious to know why? Check out my Jura wines film.

The Jura is fascinating wine country. Despite its small size, this historic French vineyard is beloved by sommeliers the world over. I was intrigued by how a tiny, 2000-hectare vineyard gained such an ardent following. So, in 2021, I set off to eastern France to make a Jura wine film. My rockstar camera crew captured the beauty of Jura wine country and its wonderful producers. In this concise Jura wine film, we bring you all that you need to know to appreciate Jura wines – the distinctive grapes, the varied wine styles, the unique terroir, and more.

Join me as I dig in the vineyard soils with Stéphane Tissot, learn the secrets of Vin Jaune winemaking with Domaine Macle, and taste some Crémant du Jura bubblies with Domaine Baud. Tour the market of Arbois with Meilleur Ouvrier de France, sommelier Philippe Troussard to find out what foods pair best with Jura wine.

To learn more about Jura wines, the region’s famous Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau, and more, check out my Jura wines article here. Otherwise, hope you enjoy this short Jura wine film. If you do, please feel free to give me a like, share, or comment!
